Chatswood is one of Sydney’s great commercial centres, with a vibrant mix of retailers, restaurants, professional services, health providers and family businesses. The Metro has brought more people into the CBD and strengthened Chatswood’s role as a major transport, employment and retail hub.

But I also know many local businesses are doing it tough currently. Rising costs, weaker household spending, plummeting consumer and business confidence, labour shortages, insurance, compliance burdens and payroll tax pressures are all making it harder to employ, invest and grow.

That is why I have been strongly advocating for policies that make NSW more competitive and give businesses the confidence to get ahead. Payroll tax remains a major concern, particularly for growing businesses that are effectively penalised for employing more people. I am also concerned by federal capital gains tax changes which risk taxing enterprise, succession and the years of work that go into building a business.

Locally, Chatswood’s success depends on accessible streets, safe public spaces, reliable transport, sensible planning and investment in infrastructure. Density and development must be matched with the services, parking, open space and amenity that allow business precincts to thrive.
