Last week we had the opportunity to visit Chatswood Police Station to listen in on their Community Safety Precinct Report. Here are some of North Shore Police Area Command “NSPAC”'s takeaways.
Motor Vehicle Thefts:
There has been an increase in motor vehicle thefts occurring at night across the North Shore. Police are urging residents to always lock your car doors and remove any valuables from vehicles when unattended.
Regional Operations:
Regional operations are currently focused on the Chatswood Interchange area to target and reduce crime in the region.
Crime Statistics from NSPAC Intelligence Unit:
- Assault Domestic Violence (DV): 23% decrease
- Assault Non-DV: No change
- Break & Enter Residential: 4% increase
- Break & Enter Commercial: 8% increase
- Stolen Vehicles: 11% decrease
- Stealing from a Vehicle: 11% increase
- Stealing from a Dwelling: 11% decrease
- Malicious Damage: 16% decrease
- Robbery: 29% increase
Domestic Violence:
From September to November, the NSPAC received 455 domestic violence reports, with only a small percentage involving bodily harm. If you are concerned for your safety or witness domestic violence, always call 000. It is crucial to report any incidents immediately.
Home Security:
Residents are encouraged to lock all windows and doors and consider installing high-quality CCTV cameras for added security.
Scams:
Scams are on the rise in the NSPAC area, particularly those involving Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and phone calls pretending to be from banks. If you or someone you know is scammed, report it immediately. Please be especially vigilant with elderly family members, as they are often targeted.
Hate Crimes:
There has been an increase in hate crimes within the community. The Hate Crimes Unit of NSW Police is actively engaged in community outreach and providing support programs for victims. It's important to report any hate crimes, whether witnessed or experienced, by calling 000, visiting your local station, or reporting online.
